Who We Are
We have been building our arts education community for over 30 years, having opened our doors in 1989. It is unusual to find a facility like ours in a village, but Sutton Courtenay is where our founder and manager - Lindsay MacKenzie - grew up.
After considerable effort and dedication we are fortunate to own our beautiful, purpose-built building, helping to secure our future music, art and dance activities. Early on, we gained charitable status, emphasising our ethos of not only a quality arts education, but also a supportive and caring teaching environment and community. We have a great team of teachers, administrators and trustees - dedicated and passionate in their respective roles - and we continue to develop what we offer to do the best we can for each student.
It is our wish that creative education, presented in a friendly and approachable way, should underpin all our children’s courses. Our biggest offering and one key to our success - our Yamaha Music School - is a fantastic example of this.
The hub of Matrix Arts Centre is the main hall, with a seating capacity of 120. It has a gallery, good natural light, sprung maple floor, and dance barres. The hall is used for chamber concerts - including our very own ‘Music at Matrix concert series’, student concerts, music and dance lessons, fitness sessions and art exhibitions. A further four classrooms cater for music groups and art classes. There are five music practice rooms for individual tuition. Additional facilities include a kitchen which is available for everyone to make tea and coffee, a beautiful waiting area, staff room, and a south facing garden. Car parking is free and adjacent.
